Chelsea DuVall’s poems in d e e r  |  w o m a n offer a dramatic coming-of-age story spiked with elements of an eerie fairy tale. The poet’s use of repetition to suggest incantation and ritual, oratorical flourish and waves of emotion is striking as she vividly catalogs the betrayals that press a girl into womanhood, or, as DuVall writes: when “the dragon [is] inside the damsel.”

–Douglas Kearney (poet, performer, librettist), author of Buck Studies, Someone Took They Tongues, Mess and Mess, PATTER, The Black Automaton, and FEAR, SOME.
