Dealing with a family crisis and helping a loved one face a cataclysmic change of circumstances would be enough to test one’s strength and resilience – penning poems to deal with this trauma requires an extraordinary skill and creative talent! Jayanthi Rangan has articulated strong emotions to express her own perspective and has given voice to her husband’s perspective without being sentimental or indulging in self-pity. The form and structure of the poems and the unexpected metaphors sprinkled throughout make this book of poetry eminently readable and enjoyable.

Wheels over Potholes began as a poetry chronicle of my husband’s journey after a spinal cord injury. It is a day-to-day account of change — the slow improvements, the unexpected setbacks, the flickers of hope, and the crushing frustrations — all experienced by someone navigating a world no longer suited to his needs.

From the inaccessibility of a simple sink tap to the overwhelming challenge of turning over in bed, what once were minor tasks have become major hurdles. This new reality is not something one adjusts to overnight — it takes years of physical and emotional recalibration.

Pain is constant. Medical procedures are relentless. Even swallowing the daily cocktail of pills becomes a battle in itself. And yet, in the midst of it all, there are moments of grace: like the time he lay in his hospital bed, clumsily reaching out to pull his family into an embrace and said, “At least I can hug.”

My recent publications are with Red Noise Collective, Rattle, Hindsight journal, Io Literary journal, Zoetic Press, Stonecrop, Rubbertop, Eclectica, Elevation Review, Rigorous, Poet’s Choice, Wingless Dreamer and Indolent Books.

My short stories are published in Twisted Vine Literary Publication, Corner Club Press and Bookend Review. I write poems to renew my lease of life. They are my joy and meaning.
