A coming-of-age story written in verse, A Child Cries in Levittown examines and interrogates the insular world of middle America through the eyes of a teenage girl. Set in an unspecified suburban community, the narrator encounters conformity, emptiness, prejudice, repression, and an array of subtle cruelties that will shape her life well into adulthood. The book is a scathing critique of suburban life: the hypocrisy, the fake smiles, the insistence that everything is fine. It is also an exploration of sanity and madness, of the almost-invisible forces that can destroy the delicate balance of the human mind.
Jennifer Handy is the author of the poetry chapbooks California Burning (Bottlecap Press, 2024) and Dirt (Finishing Line Press, 2025). She is the recipient of a Pearl Hogrefe Fellowship for poetry.
