A PAINTER’S NIGHT JOURNAL by Meg Lindsay

$14.99

Painter and poet, Meg Lindsay, contemplates beach umbrellas and sheep; landscapes cast in “milky golds” and cerulean blue; husbands, children, lovers; and the making of art in this compelling debut collection.  Her language is inventive and playful, her images and metaphors are vivid and precise as she reveals the complex emotions of an artist’s life – both the external and interior landscapes – with clarity and charm.  Highly recommended.

–Cortney Davis, Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry; NEA poetry fellowship

A painter’s poems filled with mysterious and alluring imagery: sheep, swallows, slumbering dragons, screens, angels’ wings all brightly illuminated for us by Meg Lindsay’s vivid imagination.

–Sheila Kohler, author of Becoming Jane Eyre

Meg Lindsay revels in color, struggles with it, on canvas and page. We witness her journey and meet the people with whom she also struggles: husband, grown children, her unforgettable mother. Love is struggle. By the end, she has painted a portrait of herself in poetry. A rare and honest look at what it means to be an artist.

–Jimmy Roberts, composer of the award-winning Off Broadway musical, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change

The poems in Meg Lindsay‘s A Painter’s Night Journal insistently bring us into the world of the true artist compelled to paint—painter and poet overcome by colors (especially colors), shapes, tones, and by suddenly occurring subjects.  There’s a lovely and memorable poem, “Unmapped,” which among other things wonders (note how painter and poet insights are characteristically  joined in Lindsay’s work), “How to take a letter not to make a word / but to study each carved turn, / not for the line/ but the interval, the space between?”

To read Lindsay’s image and color resplendent journal poems is to feel and learn and come away with changed eyes.  Very highly recommended, especially for re-reading after you lift it from a bedside nightstand bathed with light.

–Dick Allen,  Connecticut State Poet Laureate (2010-2015) and author of Zen Master Poems
