Such tender attention is paid here to how the past abides in all the senses. These poems smell of bonfire and citronella, taste of lake water on the lips after a swim, lie curled with the pale peels of a butternut squash, and resound with the murmur of shifting ice and distant laughter. Sweet and bittersweet, these poems teach us “how to sit with one’s own blues/and say thank you to the hue.”

–Marilyn McCabe, author of Being Many Seeds, Glass Factory, Perpetual Motion, and Rugged Means of Grace.

Burning Barrel is Natalli Amato’s most recent achievement in portraying Northern New York through extraordinarily honest poems that always arrive at a revelation. Her lyrical verse springs from a life lived by waters, and she captures nature’s uncompromising beauty with sharp yet nuanced imagery—in snowflakes like moths, in cicada chants, in moonlight on lakes and rivers. Like a burning barrel itself, these poems invite us with their warmth, intensity, and a certain element of danger on occasion. Above all, Amato explores with deep skill how our memories of landscapes and homescapes shape our knowledge of family, the people we love, and those we must let go. This collection imagines each of these vital subjects as part of a powerful reminder and a challenge: “there is a world; you are of it.”

–Donald J. McNutt, Editor, Blueline Magazine
