Cloud and Bone by Dale A. Lombardi

$19.99

Midway through Cloud and Bone, Dale Lombardi’s exquisitely sensitive first collection of poems, the speaker asks: How do I sing with this catch in my throat? It’s a question that joy or sorrow can pose because there’s the hope of singing—ancient, ineluctable, and propulsive. In poems sometimes playful, sometimes heartbroken, the poet’s forms, textures, pitch and patterns, give us a music of praise and lamentation, each ‘song’ a way to bear witness to what is wondrous and wounded in the world. We trust her clear voice because a deep humility flows through it, searching and brave.

–Kimberly Cloutier Green, The Next Hunger

Dale is a genius at weaving piercing images from moments as ordinary as clouds, insights substantial as stone.  She effects this miracle with playful cartwheels of metaphor, unexpected pirouettes of praise, that bring us to vistas rife with both the beauty and the pangs of this earthly life.  Light-hearted, solemn, reverent in turn, her images are rubbed to a rare radiance by an enduring wonder that draws us to the wisdom of her years.   This is a collection to relish and return to many times.

Cloud and Bone is a debut poetry collection that moves between flights of whimsy and excavations of the deep.  It is the wonderings and wanderings of a mind, the exploration of a life, with all its rapture and wreckage.  Whether grounded in the commonplace, floating in dreamscape or pulsing with provocation, the poems beat with the question at the author’s core:  How do I live both cloud and bone?

These poems are a heart, finding its shape in the world —

Dale Lombardi is a poet and conceptual artist who takes her inspiration from old trees, stone walls and daydreams in the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut.  She had a poet’s heart from the beginning, but the poet within lay dormant as she earned degrees from Duke University (BA) and Florida State University (MS), then juggled motherhood and careers as a speech pathologist, communication consultant and corporate trainer.   Once she left the stress of careers and the vigilance of motherhood behind, she had space enough — and time — for the poet-artist within to emerge.  Ever believing in the transformative power of beauty, she now spends her days walking, wondering, and creating.
