From the Island at the End of Winter by Gail Davern

From Sussex to Wyoming Gail Davern fixes her unflinching stare on a spectrum of subjects with candour and sensuous intelligence.  In lines full of fine observation Gail takes us up mountains and through water in her quest to explore not only the relationships we have with people, but with the past, with what it means to return to one’s roots and with what we leave behind when we set off on new journeys, each of which detail visceral insights in vivid language.

–Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch

“To you who lie/ in bed at the end of the ocean,/ testing the tide for sound,/ I want you to know…” are but four lines of many in this dreamy book that lead me to understand that this poet’s project is nothing less than memory—how it’s made and makes us, why its record counts, and how we mourn it when it wounds us and long after. I love the way that terror and tenderness abide with each other in these poems. One thing poetry can do is deliver raw emotion to us in words, sentences and lines that are artful, hard-won and true, and that is what Davern does with this collection, decades in the making, and well worth the wait.

–Kathy Fagan, author of Sycamore

“Each poem embodies its own mango feast…Gail Davern writes haunting news of the heart’s memory, finding its way again and again. Taste the unfolding richness – no clutter on this table.”

–Naomi Shihab Nye
