What a delight to have Donna French McArdle’s Ifin the world! These exquisitely crafted poems reimagine the stories of such familiar mythical figures as Circe and Penelope and engage in original myth-making spun out of the delicate threads of family lore and the natural world. From scanning the sky for the Perseids’ meteor shower to attempting to knit a scarf for the first time, McArdle explores the ordinary wonders of contemporary domestic life, showing us how we might best manage its inescapable hazards. In “Blue Fish,” for example, the speaker observes, “A Blue can shred/and swallow its own fate, and so is rescued by instinct—like I am.” I’ve admired McArdle’s work since we were creative writing students in college; now, fortunate readers have an opportunity to appreciate her poetry as much as I do.
