“The poems in this luminous collection require much of us: an open mind, an attentive heart, a willingness to depart from the shores of the familiar and venture toward the unknown. Take the leap, dear reader. Something essential awaits you on the other side.”
–Tope Folarin, author of A Particular Kind of Black Man, winner of the 2021 Whiting Award for fiction.

LOCOMOTIVE OF MANGLED PARTS is a multi-level exploration of and through the craft of poetry.  It begins by reflecting on the nature of that human exercise of futility and triumph called language, the mystery of poetry itself, and the symbiosis between poet and reader that closes the circuit that poetry requires for its electricity to flow. This ars poetica lays down tracks that LOCOMOTIVE moves down on a wider journey to many physical, spiritual and emotional destinations: ghost cities, endangered aspen forests, the Covid pandemic, religious faith and doubt, the blights of war and of racism, aging, caring for a dying parent, love and daily living.

G.R. Kramer grew up in Canada, Kenya and the U.S., the child of refugees from fascism and communism. A lawyer by vocation, his passion for writing poetry has rekindled in late middle-age. His poetry has appeared in several dozen publications, including Mudfish, the Atlanta Review and New Verse News, and he has been a finalist in several national and international poetry competitions, including Writer’s Digest and Winter Anthology.
