“Composed in both poetry and short stories, Out of Idaho portrays a world of isolation, a cast of characters close to the land, to family. Individual pieces convey loss, disaster, decay. The narrator pokes the reader with vivid imagery and vibrant action; a tight and insular world confined inside its borders. Out of Idaho delivers, through these unique compositions, the state’s scent, the sense of longitude and latitude, its attitudes. Wry and spare and inviting.”

–Ken Rodgers, Writer, Co-Director, and Co-Producer, Bravo! Common Men, Uncommon Valor and I Married the War

“A poignant lament to life and death, the stories and poetry in Out of Idaho flow like a river, moving along with one unexpected turn after another. Often, author Grove Koger concludes a selection with a club, other times with tantalizing ambiguity. His language is gentle in a masculine way: strong, quiet and intimate. Confessional. Spare but loaded. We meet brothers and friends. Fathers and wives. Ghosts, either real or imagined. This new collection by Koger, a native Idahoan, ends with ‘Notes on Place Names,’ offering a key to the vivid sense of place that runs throughout this gem of a book.”

Out of Idaho surveys life, love, friendship and death in the Mountain West. While the poems reflect the anger and frustration of a young man, the stories are the more nuanced work of someone who’s reached maturity. A concluding gazetteer of place names grounds the stories in Idaho’s varied landscapes. The works’ settings range from family farms to suburban backyards, and from small towns and cities to placid lakes and mountainous wilderness. Puzzlement and fear lurk beneath the surface of the words, particularly when memory is uncertain, and violence is an ever-present danger. Is the ground beneath our feet as level as it appears? Can we count on our friends? Can love be trusted?  #short stories #poetry #love #memory #life #violence #Idaho #Mountain West #Pacific Northwest

Grove Koger is the author of a readers’ guide to travel narratives, When the Going Was Good; a chapbook of poetry, Not; and two chapbooks of short stories, Something Strange and Treacherous Waters. He’s Assistant Editor of  Deus Loci: The Lawrence Durrell Journal, and lives in Boise, Idaho, with his wife, poet Margaret Koger.
