This Wild Country takes us from everyday, unexamined life to a marvelous place where ordinary experiences shine with surprising beauty. The writing has a direct, deft style born from the poet’s commitment to exploration, honesty, and craft. Dorothy Schlesselman writes spare and essential poems that at the same time feel lush with images and feelings. She has an eye for the natural world of flowers, shrubs, birds, and the landscape of Lake Superior, which Schlesselman refers to as “this healing inland sea.” Although some poems concern challenge and loss, after reading the whole book, I felt (again borrowing this poet’s words) “held, loved, restored.”

Dorothy Schlesselman was born in Iowa, raised in Kansas City, Missouri, and educated at Macalester College and the University of Minnesota Department of Art, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree for her work combining text and audio recording with visual images. She is the recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board grant for her photography, which has been widely exhibited and collected. Schlesselman has been inspired by Lake Superior’s wild beauty ever since her first year at Macalester, when she traveled to a classmate’s home in Duluth, Minnesota, one snowy May weekend. On recent visits to the North Shore, she has painted watercolor sketches, including the cover art for this book. Her poetry has appeared in Turtle Quarterly and other publications.
