Before I have the honor of reviewing “Woman On A Shaky Bridge” by Millicent Borges Accardi, I absolutely must take a moment to review her breathtaking book cover.

Like a priceless parchment from another time and place, the book cover has a photograph of a beautiful young lady lounging on a zebra-patterned couch.
As if she is waiting for something special to happen, perhaps for a lover to appear….. or is she just daydreaming…. The book cover is wrapped with a ribbon! As though it were a gift. Open it up and look inside! It is a precious collection of poems. Each one seems to be something personal or important to the author.
Well worth the walk accross a shaky bridge if this book is waiting on the other side.

And when you get to the other side, find your own couch, curl up on it with a glass of green tea and Ms. Accardi’s precious book. That is exactly what I did.

Sometimes tender, sometimes haunting, always honest and clear eyed, a lovely first collection of poems! I highly recommend it!

WOMAN ON A SHAKY BRIDGE is a collection of one beautiful poem after another. After reading it, I found myself shaking. “Buying Sleep?” I didn’t know you could do that. You can find out how in Millicent Borges Accardi imaginative poem book.

Reminds us that there is no other kind of bridge to cross. These poems are rock solid, tough minded as rope, with imagery surprising as the breath in wood, the mouth in the wall that witnesses war, the blinking eyes of the soul. Words, like love, in Accardi’s universe, are what we have to cling to and trust.

I love to read Millicent’s poetry because she knows how to bring me “into” a poem. I love to read her poems aloud – it gives them added depth and makes me aware of the syncopation of sounds, as well as content that lets me feel her emotions. Don’t miss this lovely chapbook – you’ll be happy you read it.

Her work transports. I feel like I’ve walked barefoot through the desert. Dust in my hair. Rocks in my hands. Sky in my eyes.
