Although “Womb Worlds” is written from the point of view of a mother of a young child with cancer, author Lisa Molina‘s stark honesty and gift for musicality lift the poems into a place where there are “tiny sparkles in the night,” The reader is reminded that sometimes even the small act of decorating a house for Christmas can be miraculous or that it’s possible to celebrate Mardi Gras even in a hospital room. Molina’s poems speak to not only the unbreakable bond between parent and child, but also the interconnectedness of us all. They affirm that we are all “bound together by the shared cord and blood.” This collection is, as she writes, “a loaded box full of hope.”
–Bree A. Rolfe author of Who’s Going to Love the Dying Girl, (Unsolicited Press)

The poems in Lisa Molina’s Womb Worlds “whoosh” with “the primal pulse of life.” Journeying through her child’s cancer diagnosis and treatment, Molina’s poems invite us to listen deeply, to savor “the exquisite Normal” and to have the courage to hope. With stunning candor and vibrant imagery, Womb Worlds draws us into a liminal space of grief and uncertainty until finally “transforming the womb’s darkness / to golden light.”

–Sandra Fees, author, The Temporary Vase of Hands, Finishing Line Press, 2016

In dealing with the specificities of a boy’s disease, in “Womb Worlds,” Molina deals with life’s bigger issues. Moving and poignant, these poems reminded me of the small things we can do to be better humans, and the fragility and strength of life. Molina’s words will make you better and change you, they did me.

2023

In “Womb Worlds,” Lisa Molina invites the reader into her most intimate world where the darkness of disease collides with the tenderness of a mother’s love, as she grapples with the most terrifying corners of motherhood. The speaker in these poems is a mother with a young son going through cancer treatment at ages three, eleven, and thirteen; ultimately requiring an umbilical cord blood transplant from an unknown donor as a final effort to save his life.  From her son’s initial diagnosis at age three, to his transplant ten years later,  she writes both of specific events that occurred in exacting detail, as well as her own interior world of terror, gratitude, and growth as a woman throughout the experience. Never dwelling on what is lost, the poems in this collection focus on the light and learning that can be gained through suffering.

Lisa Molina is a writer in Austin, Texas and author of the digital chapbook, Don’t Fall in Love with Sisyphus (Fahmidan Publishing & Co, 2022).
