The Academy of American Poets (AAP) has selected Maria Lisella, as a 2020 Poet Laureate Fellow; The 23 Fellows each receive $50,000 for a combined total of $1.1 million. The awards are given to honor poets of literary merit appointed to serve in civic positions and to enable them to undertake meaningful projects that engage their fellow residents with poetry, helping to address issues important to their communities.

Maria Lisella is the sixth Queens Poet Laureate 2015-2018. Her work appears in Thieves in the Family (NYQ Books), Amore on Hope Street and Two Naked Feet.

 

Her work appears in the recently released anthologies, The Traveler”s Vade Mecum (Red Hen Press) and Shades, Colors and Internal Dialogues appears in the new anthology, What Does It Mean to Be White in America? (2LeafPress).

 

She co-curates the Italian American Writers Association literary readings — the longest running series at the Cornelia St. and Sidewalk Cafes; as well as special events at the CUNY Graduate Center’s John D. Calandra Italian American Institute and coordinates events for the Vito Marcantonio Forum.

 

As a travel writer, Maria Lisella has spelunked in caves in Madhyar Pradesh, rafted the Jordan River, ridden horseback in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro, explored the great art museums of Europe, hiked Mt. Etna in Sicily and Mount Washington in New Hampshire, and sipped Armagnac in Gascony, France.

 

She has contributed to FoxNews.com, The New York Daily News, AFAR and Travel and Leisure magazines, Sherman’s Travel, and she was a columnist for Diversion and The Star Ledger. She has also developed special projects for tourist offices such as Austria, Flanders, Sweden and the European Travel Commission.

 

She is currently a New York Expert for USA TODAY and heads the social media committee for the New York Travel Writers Association.

 

She has taught and designed courses in non-fiction writing at Touro College and Tourism and Hospitality at the Borough of Manhattan Community College of the City University of New York.
