These Magic Carpets Made of Steel is a collection of haiku that, like the famous Arlo Guthrie lyric, celebrates the ordinary and extraordinary experiences of long distance train travel in the unique 5-7-5 rhythm of the traditional haiku poem. This collection is based on my reflections of traveling on the Lake Shore Limited (New York to Chicago) and the Crescent (New York to Birmingham, Alabama). Train travel has of course helped me to stay connected with my family in New York, but it has also been one of my greatest passions since I was a graduate student at the University of Iowa, and later when I began my teaching career at Alabama State University in Montgomery. These poems relive experiences that have been loved (or at least endured) by long distance train travelers, from the anticipation of when you first board, to the sweeping landscapes that passengers see from their windows, to the adventures of being rocked to sleep (whether on a reclining seat or a fold out first class cot, to the frustrations of freight train delays, to the strangers who you bond with for the briefest time that you share on board. #Amtrak #travel #trains #traintravel #rails #railroads #crescenttrain #lakeshorelimited
